About Bingham Gallery

Paul and Susan Bingham began collecting fine American art more than 40 years ago. But neither of the two would have ever guessed that their passion would later grow into their livelihood.

In the late 1960s, Paul and Susan moved from Ogden, Utah to San Jose, California, where Paul was recruited as a sales executive for Xerox Corporation. It was then that they began acquiring works by deceased California and American artists of merit such as Maynard Dixon, Thomas Hill, Edgar Payne, E.I. Couse and others.

Eventually -- as is sometimes the case with art collectors Paul and Susan's passion turned into a small business and they opened their first gallery in Los Altos, California in 1974, with subsequent galleries in Campbell, California and San Jose, California. The Binghams continue to specialize in buying and selling paintings by pre-1940's American artists of the California and Taos schools in addition to early Utah art. Additionally, they have found great success dealing works by noted American artist Maynard Dixon (1875-1946), just one of many artists whose paintings have established Bingham Gallery's reputation as one of America's finest galleries.

The Binghams' recent dream to highlight the life and work of Maynard Dixon and a desire to preserve the legacy Dixon left after he died became a reality in the fall of 1998, when the Binghams purchased Dixon's summer home and studio in Mt. Carmel, Utah. Committed to restoring this art-historic site which had been in disrepair since the 1980's, the Binghams formed a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization in early 1999 and called it the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts, which manages this important project. Plans are currently underway to begin the fundraising for the Maynard Dixon Museum Project, a museum to be built in Dixon's honor near the Mt. Carmel property.

The Thunderbird Foundation provides artist-in-residence programs and preserves the home and studio where Dixon's memorial and ashes remain. The foundation hosts an annual art invitational and sale entitled "Maynard Dixon Country," featuring artwork by 40 contemporary American painters who share the talent and vision of Dixon. They also host workshops for individuals with special needs.

A true family-run business, the Binghams recently relocated the gallery to Mount Carmel, Utah, after having been in the San Francisco bay area for nearly 35 years. All three of the Binghams' adult children continue to lend their business acumen in the areas of advertising, public relations, website design, marketing, management and sales.

Bingham Gallery is always seeking fine examples by important, listed American artists and regularly conducts price evaluations for the general public, through a standard art industry pricing database. If you have an old painting you would like to have evaluated or would like to sell, call Paul or Susan Bingham at 1-800-992-1066 and they would be happy to make arrangements to look at your old paintings.
