America’s 7 Biggest Problems Today

In the history books, the chapter on 2022 is going to be a long one – and the year has only just begun.

A new Gallup poll asked more than a thousand Americans to name the most important issue facing the country today. Because the question was open-ended rather than multiple-choice, there was a wide variety of answers.

We’ve rounded up the most common answers, each of which was cited by at least 5% of respondents.

Here are the biggest problems in America today, according to the 1,017 survey respondents, all of whom were adults living in the United States.

Immigration

In addition to asking about the most important issue, the Gallup poll also asked people how worried they were about specific issues. As far as illegal immigration is concerned, 41% say they are very worried about it, while 23% say they are not worried about it at all.

Race relations/racism

When it comes to race relations, 41% said they worried a lot and 29% said they worried a bit. Only 13% were not concerned about race relations in America.

Unify the country

Race is certainly a problematic division in America, according to survey participants, but others thought the issue was bigger. Five percent of the participants said that the unification of the country was the biggest problem to be solved today.

Situation with Russia

Respondents who said this is the most important issue facing the United States today: 9%

Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine has caused a host of problems, ranging from a humanitarian crisis to rising gas prices and uncertainty. And there may still be other issues such as cyberattacks to worry about.

The economy in general

This broad response was particularly popular. When asked to rank the economy today, 44% of participants said it was in bad shape and a further 35% said “just right”.

High cost of living/inflation

The government/bad leadership

The biggest problem of all in America? Apparently these are the people who are supposed to fix things. More than one in five people polled by Gallup cited lack of leadership as the country’s biggest problem.
