Musgo’s “Holy Grail” Gas Sign Goes Up For Auction

Presented by Richmond Auctions.

Richmond Auctions is extremely proud to bring this NOS, Best Known Example, Holy Grail, Musgo Gasoline sign to market at our upcoming 2 day auction, August 26-27, 2022.

This 48″ Double Sided Porcelain Musgo Gas Sign is NOS (New Old Stock). It was found in an attic in Michigan and is really fresh on the market – it has never been seen by the public before.

By far, this is the best known example of this sign and is the highest rated Musgo in existence. We do not believe that a better example will be offered at auction again. NO retouching, restoration or improvement exists. This panel is truly new and old, with day one color and shine.

“No clear documents have been found on the creation or demise of the Musgo company.” However, “we know the company was in business in 1929 because all Musgo globes are dated 1929. The company was located in Muskegon, Michigan, and it is believed to have been in business only only for six months to two years.

“While the reason why the Musgo went out of business remains unknown, some people believe that, given the time period and the approaching ‘Great Depression’, they simply went bankrupt. This would help explain why the stock remaining remained on the warehouse shelves to be used at the discretion of the new warehouse owner.Others believe that Musgo followed the path of so many small gas companies and was bought out by a larger or qu ‘they went to a national brand.

“Collectors should also note that the only size panel produced by Musgo was the 48-inch porcelain panel…Any other size Musgo panel…is a reproduction.” -The Art of Collecting and Exhibiting Petroliana, Vol. 1 by Daniel K. Matthews
